Laurie Hanson Roberts
Minister of Sanctuary Worship
Laurie Hanson Roberts has been part of the Grace Avenue UMC staff since the beginning of the church in 1999. She loves to enable all ages to experience the joy and power of music and discover their own spiritual gifts. Laurie’s passion is creating meaningful worship that engages multi-sensory experiences to deepen relationships with God and one another.
Laurie holds a Bachelors of Music/Voice and a Bachelors of Music Education from Baylor University in Waco, Texas. She also holds a Masters of Music/Choral Conducting and a Masters in Sacred Music from Meadows School of the Arts and Perkins School of Theology, SMU (Dallas, Texas). She served as the Associate Minister of Music at Lovers Lane UMC in Dallas, Texas for 10 years. Upon leaving Lovers Lane, Laurie began a concert ministry, where she traveled throughout the U.S. bringing a message of hope through her music. After 5 years “on the road”, Laurie felt a strong call back into the local church, which led her to Grace Avenue.
Laurie’s ability to sing most any style has landed her in some of Dallas’ most prestigious recording studios. She has been a studio musician for Word Records and Hal Leonard Publishing. Although her training is classical, her style is contemporary and deeply spiritual. Listening to her sing allows one to understand her calling and for all to experience the presence of God through music.
Laurie also has a heart for mission. She has been deeply involved with the Susan G. Komen 3-Day/60 mile walk to end breast cancer for over 12 years. After losing her mom to this disease, Laurie became an active volunteer leading classes and training walks for future participants and has participated in the Dallas walk 12 times. She has held a seat on the Board of Directors of The God’s Child Project, which services children and families primarily in Guatemala in breaking the chains of poverty through education. Laurie can be found in Guatemala most Januarys leading a team from Grace Avenue in helping these precious children and their families.
Laurie’s husband, Bill, is the Associate Minister of Music at Grace Avenue. They have been married since 1993 and have one son, Jacob. Laurie is a lover of iced tea, poetry, good books and better conversation. She has a daily meditation and yoga practice that is a source to much of her creativity.
