A Different Kind of Christmas

A Different Kind of Christmas
Advent Worship 2020
Here is a radical understatement:  Christmas 2020 will be different than any other Christmas we have ever experienced.  Many of our seasonal traditions will be interrupted, canceled or postponed.  Many of our expectations will be thwarted, revised or go unmet.  Can we have a different kind of Christmas and it still be Christmas?

The original Christmas story from the Bible offers a resounding YES.  In fact, the coming of the long awaited Messiah in the story of a baby born in  Bethlehem rearranged expectations for all time.  People expected a monarch, a military ruler and a power-broker.  Jesus was a completely different kind of Messiah.  He was a person of humble birth.  He was a rabbi who taught about peace and justice.  He often took the form of a servant and offered his life as a gift for all humanity.

We can joyfully experience a different kind of Christmas because Jesus is a different kind of Messiah; a different kind of Christ.  In this time we are given the opportunity to see Christmas in a whole new light.  The true spirit of Christmas may be found in celebrating A Different Kind of Christmas.
